When They Have Their Own Historians
Performance at Gymnopedie, a 2,500 sq. ft. theatrical space housed in a 19th-century church in Bushwick
"When They Have Their Own Historians " is an interdisciplinary performance project that explores how bodies remember, archive, and transmit histories that are often erased from dominant narratives. Instead of relying on written records or official archives, this work turns to embodied gestures: childhood games, rituals, and collective movement, as ways of carrying memory across generations.
The project imagines the body as a historian in its own right: one that holds trauma and resilience, silences and desires, fractures and continuities. Through dance, voice, and improvisation, we will create a sensorial landscape where memory migrates, mutates, and transforms in relation to others.
We are seeking BIPOC women dancers who are interested in exploring movement as a language of remembrance and resistance, who are open to collaborative experimentation, and who bring their own embodied histories into dialogue with others.
